Synopsis

America is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin (Gossip Girl's Connor Paolo) is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter (In the Cut's Nick Damici) whose new prey are the undead. Simply known as Mister, the vampire stalker takes Martin on a journey through the locked-down towns of America's heartland, searching for a better place while taking down any bloodsuckers that cross their path. Along the way they recruit fellow travellers, including a nun (Kelly McGillis) who is caught in a crisis of faith when her followers turn into ravenous beasts. This ragtag family unit cautiously moves north, avoiding major thoroughfares that have been seized by The Brethren, a fundamentalist militia headed by Jebedia Loven (Tony award-winning actor Michael Cerveris) that interprets the plague as the Lord's work.

Buzz

"Director Jim Mickle, who co-wrote the film with his star Nick Damici, has crafted a good-looking, well-played and atmospheric apocalyptic vision." - Roger Ebert

"Shows that a savvy mixture of characterization, atmosphere and gore-eographed suspense can make even the most familiar fright tropes feel vaguely organic again." Los Angeles Times

"It’s harrowing; even the clichés are bloodcurdling; and it takes vampires out of the dime-store paperback genre and puts them back where they belong–in your nightmares, and at your throat." - New York Observer

John's Opinion

A couple of years ago I was able to catch the Jim Mickle's MULLBERRY STREET. In it he told the story of rat like zombies. Now he brings us a tale about vampires which resemble zombies. It looks to me like Mickle likes to take the standard monsters and put new twists on them and he does it quite well. STAKE LAND plays very in the same play area as the 2009 film THE ROAD. America has been ripped apart by mindless vampires and young Martin is taken under wing by the mysterious "Mister". He trains Martin while travelling along the roads of the United States seeking New Eden. STAKE LAND won the 2010 Midnight Madness award at the Toronto International Film Festival. STAKE LAND is a gorgeous looking compelling story that presents some new twists on the whole post apocalyptic zombie (vampire) genre. Be sure to keep watch for the innovative use of the vampires later in the movie.
