Synopsis
Summing up BULLHEAD in a single paragraph does not do the movie justice. The story revolves around Jacky, a Limburg cattle farmer who uses steroid and hormone injections on himself and his cows. When he is approached with an illegal proposition from Flemish beefs traders he initially goes along with the deal but has regrets once he discovers an old friend from the past is involved. BULLHEAD is much more than a crime story; it is a tragedy about fate, masculinity, friendship and dealing with hardship
Buzz
“One of the most original crime films in recent memory. Roskam exposes the shady Belgian beef industry as a world run by gangsters and opportunists where corruption, hormone peddling and even murder have become all-too-common occurrences. Within this unlikely, but always fascinating setting, the film hones its focus on the very personal tragedy of a single, profoundly troubled individual and his ongoing struggle to embody the macho persona he so desperately projects.” – Twitch Film
“While it’s maybe not the easiest film to watch, it’s truly an unforgettable, astounding piece of work.” – JoBlo’s Movie Emporium
“It’s one of those films you have to reconstruct in your mind.” – Roger Ebert
Programmer’s Opinion
Over the past year I had heard many great things about BULLHEAD and I knew it was a film that I wanted to have at the festival. I also knew that it was something different and that it was not an easy watch. I love bringing in movies which will challenge the audience and provide hours of discussion afterwards for those interested in movies. Matthias Schoenaerts performance as Jacky is nothing short of amazing. BULLHEAD is one of those punch you in the gut movies and I am truly proud to be able to bring the nominated for Best Foreign Language Film BULLHEAD for the festival as our opening night film. – John Allison
