A bizarre murder mystery brings together the most powerful woman in China, the soon-to-be-Empress Wu Zetian (Carina Lau, Curiosity Kills the Cat), and a formerly exiled detective, Dee Renjie (Andy Lau, Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon), at the infamous Imperial Palace. Hoping that he will solve the crime before her coronation, Wu appoints Dee Chief Judge of the Empire and implores him to combine his indisputable wisdom with his unparalleled martial arts skills to save the future of her dynasty. Director Hark Tsui (Seven Swords) teams with stunt director Sammo Huang in this heart-pounding, epic thriller inspired by the incredible true story of one of the Tang Dynasty’s most celebrated officials.
"Ripping fun in ways Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes could only dream of." - Slant Magazine
"What follows is a visual feast of high-flying action, vibrant colors, mystical underworlds, and CGI wonders. Oh, and maybe a talking stag or two. It’s the Chinese Sherlock Holmes movie you never knew you wanted. It’s Shanghai Holmes! No? Too far? How about this… it’s a fun mix of mystery, magic, and martial arts that wraps an interesting central story in a guise of pure entertainment." - Film School Rejects
"With its wildly inventive visual design (a hellish underground city called Phantom Bazaar leaves a big impression), jarring jumps in locations (characters move from dark, claustrophobic caves to a sweeping forest in a blink), and a general flair for supernatural shenanigans (when was the last time you saw a deer attack in the movies?), Detective Dee presents a hugely satisfying glimpse into the director’s delirious imagination. More of this, please." - Time Out Hong Kong
DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME is through and through a popcorn flick. It it is meant to entertain you with a fun mystery, over the top action and bizzare characters. Sammo Huang brings some excellent fight choreography like you've never seen before, especially in the fight scene between Dee and some rampaging deer. This one is pure entertainment.
