Synopsis

Cult director Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) delivers a bravado period action film set at the end of Japan’s feudal era. 13 Assassins - a “masterful exercise in cinematic butchery” (New York Post) – is centered around a group of elite samurai who are secretly enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord in order to prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a war torn future.

Buzz

"Does Guinness World Records have an entry for longest on-screen fight? If it doesn't, Takashi Miike's "13 Assassins" just set it. And if a record actually exists, Miike's film just broke it." - Washington Post

"13 Assassins may well be the most wholly accomplished and satisfying film to come our way all year." - Mountain Xpress

"Epic in scope, ambition, and execution, it's a classic swords-and-samurai film with postmodern blood and guts, and it's completely satisfying." - Boston Globe

John's Opinion

The classical samurai film has been around almost as long as movies have been around. Their influence on Hollywood films can't be understated. After years of making cult movies the highly prolific Takashi Miike has thrown his is hat and created 13 ASSASSINS, a film which is sure to have as much influence on North American films as any of the Kurosawa films. All of the classic tropes of Samuria films are here yet Miike still manages to bring his own unique feel. Any discussion of 13 ASSASSINS would be remiss if it did not mention the slow build up of the film which leads into one of the most epic battle sequences ever filmed. The film paces itself and takes its time introducing each of the 13 samurai and just as you feel comfortable with each of the characters you are brought into a 40 minute epic clash with the heroes battling against an army almost 20 times there size. You will be left breathless by the end of the by the end of the epic clash.
